Embarkation Day —
Everything Your Family
Needs to Know

From arriving at the port to finding your cabin and making the most of your first hours on board.

✈️ Embarkation day sets the tone for your entire cruise. A little preparation makes all the difference.

Complete Online Check-In First

Every major cruise line has online check-in that opens 30–90 days before your sail date. Do this as early as possible — it's the single biggest thing you can do to speed up embarkation day.

Online check-in lets you upload passport photos, fill out health forms, select a boarding time, and get a QR code that replaces printed documents at the port.

Download the Cruise Line App

Most cruise lines have an app that becomes your hub on board — dining reservations, daily schedule, messaging, onboard account, and in some cases your digital key card. Download and log in before you leave home.

When to Arrive

Your boarding pass will assign you a port arrival time — respect it. Ports stagger arrivals and showing up hours early doesn't get you on the ship faster. Most ships begin boarding around 11am–12pm and all passengers must be on board by 3:30–4pm.

🚗

Parking at the Port

Most cruise terminals have on-site parking. Book in advance — it fills up fast on busy sail dates and pre-booking is usually cheaper than paying at the gate.

🧳

Checking Your Luggage

Porters at the terminal take your large bags before you enter. Tip $1–2 per bag. Your luggage goes to your cabin but won't arrive until mid-afternoon — pack a carry-on with everything you need for the first few hours.

📋

What to Have Ready

Passports, your boarding pass (printed or digital), and your credit card for the onboard account. Have these accessible before you get in line — not buried at the bottom of your bag.

Security and Check-In

The terminal works like an airport — security screening first, then check-in counters where documents are verified and your keycard is issued. If you completed online check-in, this moves quickly.

Your keycard is everything on board — room key, ship ID, and payment method. Keep it somewhere safe from the moment you step on board.

Setting Up Your Onboard Account

You'll link a credit card to your onboard account at check-in. Everything you purchase — specialty dining, drinks, excursions, spa — gets charged here and billed at the end of the cruise.

10:30 – 11:30am

Arrive at the Port

Drop luggage with porters, check in, clear security, and board. Have documents ready before you get in line.

11:30am – 12:30pm

Board + Head to the Buffet

Your cabin won't be ready until around 1–1:30pm. Head straight to the buffet — it's included, the kids are hungry, and it's the best way to start exploring the ship.

12:30 – 1:30pm

Explore the Ship

Walk the decks, find the pool, locate the kids club, and figure out where everything is while the ship is still quiet.

1:00 – 1:30pm

Cabin Opens

Head to your cabin, drop your carry-on, meet your cabin steward, and get oriented. Large luggage arrives later in the afternoon.

3:00 – 4:00pm

Muster Drill

Required for all passengers before departure. Most lines now do this digitally through the app — confirm your cruise line's process ahead of time.

4:00 – 5:00pm

Sail Away ⚓

Get to the top deck for sail away — one of the best moments of any cruise. The energy is high, the kids love it, and it's a great family photo opportunity.

Make Your Dining and Activity Reservations

Specialty restaurants, shows, character experiences (on DCL), spa appointments — many require reservations and the popular ones book up fast. As soon as you're on board, open the cruise line app and book your week before the good spots fill up.

This is especially important on Disney Cruise Line and on Royal Caribbean where specialty restaurants on popular ships sell out quickly.

🍽️

Specialty Dining

Book specialty restaurant nights on day one. Decide which nights make sense — usually early in the cruise before you settle into a routine.

🎭

Shows & Entertainment

Broadway-style shows and headliner entertainment often have reserved seating or timed entry. Check the app and book what you want to see.

Shore Excursions

If you haven't booked excursions yet, do it today. Popular family excursions — beach breaks and water parks especially — sell out before the ship reaches port.

Pack This — Your Bags Won't Arrive Until Later

Your checked luggage typically arrives between 3–6pm. Your carry-on needs to cover the first few hours on board.

~ ~ ~
Can we eat as soon as we board?
Yes — the buffet opens as soon as boarding begins and is included in your fare. It's the best option for lunch on embarkation day since the main dining room doesn't open until dinner.
What if our luggage doesn't arrive by dinner?
Let your cabin steward know and they'll follow up with the luggage team. This is why having a change of clothes in your carry-on matters — dress code applies even on night one.
Can we use the pool on embarkation day?
Absolutely — embarkation day is one of the best days to use the pool because it's less crowded than the rest of the cruise. Pack your swimsuit in your carry-on.
Is the muster drill mandatory?
Yes, required by maritime law. Most cruise lines now do a digital version through the app — much faster than the old all-hands version.
What if a family member gets separated at the port?
Designate a meeting spot before you enter the terminal — near the main entrance or check-in counters. Keep a cell phone charged and accessible until everyone is on board.
